For all of us that have a desire to run, today is a big day as 23,000 runners will trek from Hopkinton to Boston during the 117th Boston Marathon. It also pulls the heart strings as the victims of Newtown, Connecticut's elementary school tragedy will be honored. According the BAA(Boston Athletic Association) president, the marathon carries “special significance” in that the 26 miles of the race course will serve as a tribute to each of the 26 victims.

A moment of silence was held prior to the start of the world's oldest annual marathon to remember the 26 victims of the Newtown, Conn. shooting. There will also be 26 seconds of silence at the starting line before each wave of the race. Mile marker 26 was recently dedicated to the 26 victims who lost their lives in December.
